After many weeks of struggling, I hope that I have finally produced a good guide for basic video editing, intended to get the beginner started and more comfortable with the video editing process. While it is mainly based on Vegas, much of it should be adaptable to some other timeline based video editing programs. Read More

I first set eyes upon the Focus Enhancement FS-5 Digital Hard Disk recorder at the IOV AGM. It did look very different to the previous versions and it supposedly does a lot more. Eventually I received the machine from the UK distributors, Holdan Ltd, together with a USB Wireless Dongle. Read More

Mac editors keep waiting for good news from Apple about Blu-ray Authoring and support. This past week at the WWDC conference Apple made many exciting announcements, but unfortunately Final Cut Studio 3 (with or without Blu-ray support) was not one of them.

As always, the Videoguys have the solution for you! We worked with Roxio and Pioneer to put together several bundles that allow you to edit with Final Cut Studio 2 and deliver your final production to Blu-ray disc using the Pioneer BDR- Read More

Certainly for this immediate point in time, it's very difficult not to see Vegas 9 as, frankly, the most simply effective RED editing solution currently on the market for small to moderate sized projects. Fast, efficient, flexible and totally unified into a single piece of software that costs less than $1000. Time will tell if Vegas handles longer projects just as well but if ever there was a time for FCP, Avid and Premiere editors and indy filmmakers to sit up and take notice of Vegas, it's now Read More

Focus Enhancements has been hitting the ball out of the park with hard drive recorders for several years now, and the big brains there have just made another leap. Enter the FS-H200, which at first glance looks like an FS-5 hard disc recorder. However, when you turn it on it’s side, you will find a Compact Flash slot instead of an internal hard drive. Using HV and HDV’s 13-gigs-per-hour data rate, it’s an easy calculation that a 16Gb compact flash card will record over an hour of footage, and Read More

Direct To Drive: This portable HD video recorder offers a few surprises. For those who are not up on all of the acronyms, DTE means “Direct To Edit,” a Focus Enhancements registered trademark. The Focus Enhancements FS-5 is a disk drive that captures video from HDV or DV cameras and can then be plugged directly into an NLE for editing. Read More

Welcome back to our presentation of how HP’s new Intel Nehalem-based workstations compare to older workstations when rendering from Adobe Creative Suite 4 (CS4). Briefly, in the last installment, I detailed the tests that I performed, and discussed the results for DV and HDV source materials. This time out, I present the results for DVCPRO HD, AVCHD, and Red and share how the Z400 and Z800 performed with Hyper-threaded Technology (HTT) enabled and disabled. Read More
