In this article, I'm going to illustrate how our studio dealt with footage from a multiday shoot using AVCHD cameras (along with a mix of HDV and DV), resulting in a long-form DVD for '80s pop legend and General Hospital alumnus Rick Springfield.

The signature benefit of AVCHD is its compression efficiency as an MPEG-4-based codec, which means it can store more video information at lower bitrates than HDV. But as most of who have worked with it know, AVCHD can be a bear to edit, and the cha Read More

Canon USA choose the FCP SuperMeet in San Francisco as the first public venue in which to display the same mock-up for a U.S. audience. Similar to the first unveiling at InterBEE, the unlabeled model was shown only under glass, however I managed to sneak a few photos when it was briefly out of its display case at the conclusion of the event. Legal videographers need to make high quality A/V recordings and archive safety copies of them for 60 to 90 days. Deposition videos are usually recorded and delivered on DVD and backed up to SVHS for failsafe copies. But with the pro video community as a whole moving away from tape as an acquisition or even backup up format, the obsolescence of SVHS tape as well as problematic storage and archiving issues, non-tape back up just makes more sense these days.

I’ll take a moment of of my day editing on an Avid to deal with something in the Final Cut Studio world. Specifically, Apple just released an update to the entire package today.

Pro Applications Update 2010-01 improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues. This update is recommended for all users of Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Server, and Logic Studio. Read More

For editors, there’s good news and bad news concerning camera manufacturers. The good news is that a stream of innovative, impressive and technologically amazing new cameras are being rolled out that shoot fantastic new formats for independent filmmakers, DPs and directors of all kinds. The bad news is that we have to edit the footage.

I was just becoming awesome at transcoding when Avid released its “mix-and-match” feature for Media Composer 4.0. With mix-and-match, any kind of footage c Read More

The workflow of today centers on tapeless acquisition. Yet we must remember that it was Focus Enhancements—through its FireStore Direct To Edit products—that led the way to tapeless acquisition even when everyone was exclusively shooting tape.

In short, the FSH units are wonderful devices for a format that is being superseded. The FS-H200 and FS-H200 Pro should be part of any HDV shooter's toolkit. For the $300 difference, the Pro adds some nice features, but even the $895 original unit pro Read More

Besides all the advantages and possibilities shooting with a HDSLR offers, there are some major drawbacks. For me the biggest problems are: rolling shutter (but even the red has it), no audio control and the too contrasty, over-compressed, 4:2:0 h264 output. You can create or download a “flat-look” profile for your camera, which basically eliminates contrast by lifting blacks and crushing highlights when the camera sensor processes the image before compressing it. After playing around and testin Read More
