Heath just got off the phone with Apple’s Richard Townhill, senior director of applications marketing, who took the time to update him on the latest major update to Final Cut Pro X, ver. 10.0.3. Apple is delivering multicam support, broadcast monitoring via third-party cards and boxes (in beta), advanced chroma keying features, XML 1.1, the ability to import layered Photoshop graphics (PSD), and media relinking. FCP X or in the more unforgiving circles iMovie Pro has divided opinion. It has alienated many people who were die hard FCP 7 users, like me, due to the lack of key features and no backward compatibility with the older system. I have more of less moved over to Premiere due to increasingly impressive features (I am also eyeing the new Avid MC6 which has taken a giant leap forward with the new release, but more on that in a future post) but I am still checking out FCP X. I own it and would never d Read More

XML (eXtensible Markup Language) has become a common method of data interchange between postproduction applications. Standard XML variations are like Romance languages: one version is as different from another as German is from French; thus, translation software is required. Apple's Final Cut Pro X was updated to include XML interchange, but this new version of XML (labeled FCP XML) is completely different from the XML format used in FCP 7. Stretching the language analogy, FCP 7's XML is as diff Read More

Q: Can you tell us about AJA's technology that supports the new Avid products?

A: Avid's release of 6.0 software for Media Composer and Symphony as well as the 10.0 release of NewsCutter introduces a new SDK structure for third party hardware known as Open I/O. Through Open I/O, end users can utilize any of our current IO hardware including KONA 3G, KONA LHi, KONA LHe Plus, Io Express, Io XT and even the legacy KONA 3. File this post under “how in the hell did I not know MPEG Streamclip could do this!” This being take the URL of a YouTube video and convert it into a usable file. That is one of those tasks that has come up time and time again and I’ve often struggled with how to make it happen. I’m not sure how long MPEG Streamclip has had this function but I’m going to chalk it up to you learn something new every day. Read More

With its top-of-the-line media management tools, generous suite of high-end software, and impeccable history, the Avid Media Composer 5.5 suite is perfect for any editor who is looking to take their editing to the next level.

Ever since introducing Media Composer back in 1989, Avid has claimed a large section of the video editing market by making its editing software a standard for others to live up to. This was due not only to Avid's early foray into the world of nonlinear editing, but as a Read More

Let’s start this review off by dispelling a long-held rumor. I’m a PC guy, just always have been, and after reviewing just about every PC NLE at least once, I have settled on Adobe Premiere Pro (and the CS 5.5 suite) as my editor of choice. Not too long ago, I had a freelance client that absolutely insisted on Apple ProRes files for the output of a project. Unfortunately, Apple does not allow PCs to write ProRes files, and at the time PC’s couldn’t read them either.

Fast-forward a few mon Read More

This past summer Adobe was running a Promotion to get both Mac and PC users to Make the Switch from Apple Final Cut Pro or Avid Media Composer to Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium. The promotion was a tremendous success and it was our most successful Adobe sale in years. However, like all good things, the Switcher promotion came to an end in October.

While doing our year-end inventory in the warehouse we discovered that we had some of the promotional inventory left over. We cost-averaged it wit Read More
