It's amazing how much bad audio there is on video these days, especially in interviews. Too much emphasis is placed on using on-camera mics as against actually aiming for tippy top audio. Read More

I'm currently working on a feature film that will be my last Final Cut Pro 7 project. I'd just finished implementing a custom solution to automatically log and sort clips as they are brought in, when it suddenly occurred to me that a lot of what I was doing would not be possible in the future with a competing NLE (at least not on the Mac; Sony Vegas has great scripting capabilities). Massive performance improvements are worth the upgrade alone; an outstanding update to a classy, powerful editor

It’s a little disconcerting when a software publisher releases an update but doesn’t bother to put a list of new features on its website. We half expected Vegas Pro 11 to be a damp squib, but the truth is quite the opposite. Read More

Chris Marino from WideOpenCamera.com and I were wondering how I would get an edit to him for grading in AE out of Avid with out having to shell out $500 for the Automatic Duck plugin. We started exploring options and it turns out it's actually quite easy. The obvious route would be EDL but After Effects has no EDL import function. However, Premiere does. Once you use that to get your sequence in and you've relinked it just replace your sequence with an After Effects comp. I don't believe there's Read More

Tony asks: With previous versions of Final Cut Pro there were tons of plugins and tools to enhance the software. Where did they all go? With Final Cut Pro X it seems like you just purchase and download with no plugin support. What gives? Any resources or a tool that can make the transition to what I payed thousands of dollars for? Apple today posted a FCP X Answers To Common Questions page in attempts to address some pro editors concerns (read: “do damage control”) about the new application. While it brings some much-needed clarity to some questions (about sharing projects, etc.) many of the answers (to their own carefully phrased) questions talk around the issues. Read More

Much has been said about what Final Cut Pro X does not do, and I agree that some key functionality has been omitted that Apple needs to address soon. However, there is a lot to like here as well, so I thought I’d point out some features that stand out to me as an editor of over 20 years that I’ve wanted for a long time. The majority of my projects I end up mixing myself directly in the NLE since I have a background in recording and mixing, thats why these new features are pretty cool to me. Read More

Now that Final Cut Pro X has been out for a full 24 hours, the internet has rendered its verdict on the render-free software, and most of the backlash on Twitter seems to be coming from seasoned professionals. Sure, there were bound to be some repercussions when rebooting an application with a 94% customer satisfaction rate. But some of the features Apple dropped — tape ingest, multiclip, backward compatibility, and the viewer itself — make the “Pro” moniker pretty hard to justify. I’m only gett Read More

Recently I was reading a blog post from director Robin Schmidt over at ww.elskid.com which got me curious. He was doing a comparison between MPEG Streamclip and rarevisions 5DtoRGB. I was using MPEG Streamclip for myself to convert my 5D footage. From the beginning I was always aware of the obvious gamma shift you get using MPEG Streamclip. I just started to convert to Proxy files for editing and reconnect to my original files. Read More
