Doug has been following the ‘NLE Wars’ with quite a bit of interest for some time now. Like many, folks who have been using FCP for years, including all of his own current work work, as well as a number of feature films in the past, He is very concerned about the end-of-life for FCP/FC Studio in the wake of the release of FCP X, and he's really, really, not motivated to switch to another platform. Switching costs time, switching costs money. Switching means that a video that could take a half a Read More

Asking a freelance director of photography about the codecs of their Panasonic cameras is like asking a mechanic about the engine of a car. Be prepared for a long technical answer. All you need to know is why a certain codec is important and correct for your shoot. Panasonic currently has two often confused codecs: DVCPRO HD and AVC Intra. The third codec, AVC Ultra, is to be released next year. Read More

For the past number of years I have been working on a Mac Pro, with two 23" Apple Cinema Displays, running Legacy versions of FCP. I had added a Matrox MXO box, which went between my monitor card and my second ACD to provide Broadcast Monitoring so that I could view my video output. Hitting the Command F-12 keys would toggle the second monitor between a standard Mac Desktop and a Broadcast Monitor. This was extremely helpful in viewing and judging video output, as the Canvas window does not prov Read More

Philip learnt to edit tape to tape about 16 years ago at Sky News whist working as a News Cameraman. It made his camerawork SO much better. It was a great way to learn to edit. No “Apple Z”, you had to make hard decisions and stick with them. You also had to be FAST. Read More

As a long-time Final Cut Pro user, David Lawrence has been looking for a new NLE, since FCPX isn't an option for his editing style and needs. Being a Final Cut Pro 7 editor converting to Premiere Pro I had a laundry list of things that I was hoping would be added to CS6, several of which I figured were no brainers in order to to fix up an editing program which was most of the way there but still had a ton of really odd and un-user friendly design choices. So of my list what has been fixed and what has not? Read More

Our review of Sorenson Squeeze 8 is similar to our previous review of Squeeze 7 and much of what we wrote still applies to Squeeze 8. The latest rev of Sorenson Squeeze looks and feels the same and is an evolution of the professional compression suite with robust support for the most widely used codecs for broadcast, web and mobile platforms as well as physical media. We'll focus on the new features versus the nuts and bults which you can read in our previous review. Read More

A Filmmaker reader recently emailed me with a simple question. After going to film school, making some shorts and working conspicuously within his means, he’s now written a script purely from the imagination — not censoring himself by thinking of things like money and production requirements. The resulting project, I take it, is too big for his usual DIY methods. He asked, “What do I do now?” Read More

Adobe launches CS6 Production Premium with a revamped UI, a faster and more efficient After Effects, and SpeedGrade – a professional color grading application

It goes without saying that the production industry has seen some significant changes in the past couple of years. Disruptive camera technology (RED ONE, Canon 5D Mark II, etc.) has created a new industry in which low-budget filmmakers can now compete with studios in delivering a professional looking film. The new (or renewed) interest in Avid Media Composer is being fueled by Apple’s launch of Final Cut Pro X last year and aided by Avid’s discounted cross-grade price. Many experienced FCP editors are now investigating the nuances of what seems like a completely foreign interface to some. Tutorial DVDs like Steve Hullfish’s Avid Media Composer for Final Cut Pro Users from Class on Demand is a great start. Read More
