I really like Magic Bullet Looks. I like it so much that I personally think that every editor should have it in their arsenal of plug-ins, but there is one little problem. In these difficult economic times, $399 might be a little out of some people’s reach. Thankfully, Red Giant Software has decided to give us a “light” version of Looks and called it, appropriately enough, Quick Looks (MBQL). Let’s see what Red Giant has done to make this plug-in worth your while. Read More

The Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick model 801e (which I’m now going to shorten to the “HD Pro”) is an external USB 2.0 television receiver the size of a pack of stick gum. Being so small and transportable the HD Pro is naturally marketed for use with laptops and folks on the go Read More

As the second part to my “kicking the tires” test of the new Avid Media Access architecture I wanted to try and understand how AMA works as part of Avid media management. In case this is your first time hearing about AMA, it’s a new way for Avid Media Composer (as well as Symphony and NewsCutter) to access tapeless media. Currently supporting XDCAM and P2 media, the software natively supports editing these formats with no rewrapping or transcoding. Read More

Adobe, the software development powerhouse behind Photoshop, Premiere, and dozens of other content creation suites, has finally embraced the power of the GPU. Amazingly, until Adobe's CS4 suite of graphics software came out this year, the company which has nearly built their empire on graphics related software, relied entirely on the system's CPU for processing. Telestream Episode Pro has emerged as a top performer on the Mac, and last December, Telestream released a Windows version. It’s an affordable tool that all HD producers on both platforms need to be aware of, so I’m devoting this month’s Affordable HD to a review of this product Read More

The G-RAID 3 is an external hard drive that directly attaches to a computer which performs all RAID operations in hardware transparent to the operating system. The G-RAID 3 is another Mac-inspired design from G-Technology, bearing much resemblance to a Power Mac G5 or a Mac Pro. Read More

Some time has passed since the MXO2 shipped in 2008 enough time for people who were a little hesitant about Matrox coming back to the Mac with some new offerings to really test the waters with the MXO and now the MXO2. I can say that it is truly a well rounded I/O device and I will spare alot of you with the full run down of specs because that can all be found at the main site for the MXO2 HERE. Read More

Modern production workflows benefit tremendously from applications such as Adobe CS4 Production Premium that are architected and optimized for 64-bit operating systems. HD workflows can show 50% to 200% speedup moving from 32-bit with 4GB of RAM to 64-bit with 16GB of RAM1 . Read More

When Avid announced Media Composer 3.5 and the new Avid Media Access architecture the first thing I wondered was how would this new way of importing and using media would work when it comes to one of Avid’s strongest features: Media Management. When you designate an Avid media drive the app creates a folder on that drive (either an OMFI Folder or Avid Media Files folder) and all media captured or imported into the software resides in that directory, on that drive. That’s one reason Avid media ma Read More

As an editor and motion graphic artist, I love plug-ins, and every once in a while (sometimes a long while) a plug-in pack comes along that either pushes the bounds of what we know a program can do, or it takes an existing idea and improves on it. Boris Continuum Complete 6 AE has done both of those. Let's find out how they have done it, and why you are going to want to either upgrade, or get this pack to add to your collection. Read More

While Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 has been out for several months now, I thought I'd take a look at it from a Premiere Elements user perspective while still looking at some of the new features. The application is for professional video editors, but there is an upgrade path for Premiere Elements users. Both applications edit video, and both offer a wealth of transitions and effects, but Premiere Pro offers more professional features that aren't found in consumer level video editing applications Read More

The largest issue in post production is maintaining the highest quality for compositing, graphics, effects and delivery; whether that content is used in broadcast, theatrical or direct to DVD release. Camera native codecs are amazing for their ability to capture light at the highest quality, yet this “native” camera data was never meant to work directly within the editing process, only within the manufacturers proprietary camera hardware. This intermediate codec, called ProRes, was desi Read More

I have been using Sonicfire Pro ever since it was SmartSound 1.0 -- at least 11 years. Over this period of time, the product has matured into what I can unequivocally state is the essential music bed application for any project which lacks the budget for expensive licensing or custom composition.
