John DeMaio is a Producer, Director, DP and Editor working out of Orlando, Florida. He has been a production professional since 1996 and has a vast knowledge of all things production and post.

When John first heard the news about Media Composer 6, he was genuinely excited. It has been a long time since an NLE has given him a reason to look forward to its release. After the release of FCP X, he realized (along with everyone else in the professional film and video world) that he would have to st Read More

HD Video Pro recently named Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Production Premium as my top product of 2011. With the release of their Mercury Playback Engine, as well as Apple’s release of Final Cut Pro X, Adobe has slowly but surely taken back some of the NLE marketshare that Apple has dominated over the years. With the ability to throw almost any codec at Premiere Pro and edit natively, Adobe has recently partnered with Automatic Duck to help improve the workflow integration into the system. Read More

2011 is drawing to a close and before I start making predictions for 2012, I thought I’d have a look back at 2011 to revisit some of the video industry developments that I thought were the most significant for the segments of the event and corporate video production industry that I work in and cover as a video industry journalist. Now let me be upfront with my biases because they certainly shape my preferences and the perspective in which I see video industry developments. Read More

6 months later, and the "discussion" of FCPX has still not quieted down. A recent ep of "That Post Show", as well as a post by Philip Hodgetts, has thrown some fuel into the fire. I was going to post on Philips post, but that has already turned into a god awful mess. Read More

2011 has been quite a year for Videoguys and our industry. Things changed dramatically back in April when Apple gave a first look of their new FCPX editing software during the NAB show in Vegas. I was at the event, and the room was filled with excitement, energy and anticipation. That is until after the Apple presentation. For the professional editors and broadcasters in the room, it left them feeling nervous and uneasy about Apple's commitment to them, their workflows and professional editin Read More

Let’s start this review off by dispelling a long-held rumor. I’m a PC guy, just always have been, and after reviewing just about every PC NLE at least once, I have settled on Adobe Premiere Pro (and the CS 5.5 suite) as my editor of choice. Not too long ago, I had a freelance client that absolutely insisted on Apple ProRes files for the output of a project. Unfortunately, Apple does not allow PCs to write ProRes files, and at the time PC’s couldn’t read them either.

Fast-forward a few mon Read More

The launch of Apple Final Cut Pro X stood the editing industry on its collective ear. It also sparked some very interesting – and occasionally heated – discussions about what the design of a modern, nonlinear editing application really should be. NLEs that we all use today are a collection of terminology, tools, designs and workflows borrowed from different technologies. Read More

Scott has always been amazed at just how fast the hands of time move when we are sitting at our edit suites. It seems like yesterday that Apple stock was $17 and Michael Dell was speculating on what he would do if he were in charge of Apple: “I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.” It was Oct. 6, 1997, and Apple had recently purchased a pro video editing software package called KeyGrip from Macromedia. In 1998, Apple changed that name to Final Cut Pro and a revolution bega Read More

Over the past year Videoguys.com have taken some heat in some online tech forums and communities. We were very late to embrace the original Sandy Bridge processors and even when we did recommend one, it was with some caveats.

Videoguys now recommends the Sandy Bridge-E processor with X79 chipset! Read More
