I've created a three-part tutorial on Blu-ray burning with Avid Media Composer, Sorenson Squeeze, and Avid DVD by Sonic. It covers the following parts:

  • How to export from an Avid HD project (in Avid Media Composer)
  • How to use Sorenson Squeeze for creating Blu-ray files
  • How to burn to Blu-ray using Avid DVD Read More

Recently fellow editor Shane Ross and I were discussing the relative merits of grading in Avid Media Composer versus Apple’s FCP or Color, as well as using the Colorista plug-in. Our conversation got down to how each treated the image when you used the color wheels. After I did a quick test, it was obvious that FCP and Avid don’t process the image in quite the same way, even when you push what appears to be the equivalent control in the same direction. So I decided to dig a bit deeper. Read More

Knowing both systems is VERY important in today’s post production market. Don’t be labelled as an “FCP Editor” or “Avid Editor.” Just be known as simply, an editor. You need to be known as someone who can use either tool, because that will make you far more marketable. Read More

The Thunder RAID eSATA/USB 2.0 Portable System is great for multi-stream video playback. The multiple RAID configurations give it an available degree of fault tolerance and reliability. At around 26 cents per gigabyte, we find the Thunder RAID well worth the few kinks we experienced during our RAID reconfigurations. Read More

If you are familiar with the more expensive Canon EOS 7D, you'll notice that quite a few of the features listed above were handed down from this camera. There is a lot of chatter online about the viability of the EOS 7D now that the Rebel T2i offers many of its features but with a price savings of $900 (based on street pricing). The thinking is that maybe they should get the Rebel T2i instead and put the extra $$$ toward better & faster lenses. Since this overview was written with the idea of he Read More

In this article Walter Biscardi, Jr. tries out the new MC Color controller from Euphonix.

Apple Color has brought a powerful color enhancement tool to the masses much like Final Cut Pro did for editing when it was released. What was once possible with only a high end hardware based system, like daVinci, was now in the hands of anyone with $999 who purchases Final Cut Studio. What has finally started to appear on the landscape are reasonably priced hardware controllers that emulates the same Read More

This year’s “State of the Edit” report harvested some timely perspectives on our chosen craft from top industry insiders. “We’re seeing a growing interest in what we call ‘editing for engaging experiences’ in Internet distribution, letting Internet viewers appreciate the additional benefits of Web-based delivery,” said Simon Hayhurst, senior director, product management, dynamic media at Adobe Systems Inc. “That means including all the metadata information available to the online viewer.
