It’s official. Today, after 15 years, OneRiver Media officially purchased our first licensed seat of Avid Media Composer. This was actually a long time coming, as we’re constantly in situations where Final Cut Pro 7 has limitations in how we work in the timeline. And don’t get me wrong; we’re not completely jumping ship from Final Cut Pro. We still have several projects that are in Final Cut Pro 7 right now, and may even continue to use Final Cut Pro 7 until we get solid hardware migration worki Read More

I was fortunate to beta test Final Cut Pro 1 back in early 1999; my company had the second training tool for Final Cut Pro a few months later with the DV Companion; I’ve been writing about editing paradigms and new workflows/new professionals for some time. I was on record as wanting Apple to do the “Apple thing” for Final Cut Pro and pursue some new paradigms for editing. Read More

In the past few years, a barrage of new video acquisition formats and recording methodologies have sprouted like mushrooms after the rain. The major shift has come in the form of tapeless, file-based acquisition that uses equipment that has its roots in the information technology industry.

As video post-production has scrambled to keep up, editors have been left with little choice than to become ersatz compression specialists and computer technologists. We all wear a few extra hats these days Read More

First off Final Cut Pro X is a new application. It is not an update to FCP 7. I think that many, including me, will continue to use FCP 7 along with FCP X after FCP X arrives. I hope that there is a workflow between FCP 7 and FCP X. Read More

Sunday before NAB is a very busy day, filled with dealer meetings all over Vegas. Here's a quick run down on our very busy day. We started today with Grass Valley at the MGM, then dashed over to the Aria for Avid. Next it was on to AJA and Matrox. Here is my quick report from day zero of NAB. We'll be posting full details for each vendor later in the week. Read More

Red Giant was gracious enough to allow me to test-drive Colorista II. Building and improving on the original in every way, Colorista II is ac color grading plug-in for Final Cut Pro users. Colorista II also supports Adobe After Effects and Premier.

Colorista II gives you the ability to grade with Primary, Secondary, HSL, and Master Controls using color wheels all within the Final Cut Pro. This provides you with an unprecedented amount of control from a plug-in, rather than jumping back and Read More

When talking software I think of new versions in two ways: updates and upgrades. Updates are more like the smaller “dot” releases that take a piece of software from version 2.0 to 2.0.1 or 2.1. Then there’s upgrades that move a full version from 2.0 to 3.0. Somewhere in between there’s upgradey-updates that move from, say, 5.0 to 5.5. Read More

Add in Thunderbolt and Lion and it’s been a promising day for the Mac professional.

By now everyone who’s ever edited a frame of video and has a web connection knows that Apple recently held an small, secret, invitation-only meeting at their headquarters in Cupertino where they previewed the next version of Final Cut Pro. This was an extremely unusual move as Apple rarely ever demos any of their products before they ship. Read More

I’m going to do something I don’t think I’ve ever done before. I am going to highly recommend a program that runs only on Windows. In fact, I am going to recommend a program that’s so good, I bought an HP laptop running Windows 7 JUST so I could run Sony VEGAS’ Professional NLE. Nobody is more shocked than me. Read More

2010 was one of those years that I think we will look back at as a key turning point in our industry. While HD camcorders have been around for 5 years, it was in 2010 that we hit the tipping point that made HD editing a reality for everyone. Many professional videographers migrated to HD years ago with an HDV camcorder that delivered great looking footage. The resolution was there, but the camcorders lacked the optics and focal controls, and flexibility, to make your video look like something sh Read More

Well we are now in to 2011 so it’s time to look back at 2010 and some of the products that became available. Last year my award went to the excellent Convergent Designs NanoFlash. As with last year there is no real meaning to the award, it’s just an excuse for me to highlight my favourite product from 2010. Read More
