There are three constants in life—death, taxes, and oversized workstations. Why are workstations so large? They need breathing space for their powerful components, which could overheat if they aren’t cooled properly. As a result, no one had successfully designed an all-in-one workstation. Apart from squeezing everything into what is essentially the back of a monitor, there’s this vexing problem of how to disperse the heat. If the components are just inches from your face, you would have to liste

Overall, with the release of CS6, Adobe have delivered us an awesomely powerful set of tools, with many useful, time-saving and creative features that far surpass what many other 'software suites' offer. The wheel has not been re-invented here, but the tyre's been upgraded, the rim strengthened and the alloy very much pimped! (Ed: please...no more metaphors!) Here at Fraktiv - and through our new venture at geebeebee media - we're already putting CS6 through its paces on several more edits

For the past number of years I have been working on a Mac Pro, with two 23" Apple Cinema Displays, running Legacy versions of FCP. I had added a Matrox MXO box, which went between my monitor card and my second ACD to provide Broadcast Monitoring so that I could view my video output. Hitting the Command F-12 keys would toggle the second monitor between a standard Mac Desktop and a Broadcast Monitor. This was extremely helpful in viewing and judging video output, as the Canvas window does not prov

I know what you all are asking yourselves: “What did Shane edit that NAB wrap-up video with?” Plenty of you asked on Twitter, and I know you WOULD have asked on my blog in the comments…but I offered up the information before you could. Because I knew you’d ask.
So yes, I used Adobe Premiere CS5.5 to start the edit…mainly the inputting and organization part…and pulling the selects I wanted to use.

Adobe recently announced the new CS6 versions of its production tools. 100 ACRE FILMS has been an all Adobe shop since it started, and we’re very excited about what’s included in the latest versions. Adobe took a strong toolset and made them even more powerful and user friendly. We got an advanced look, and a chance to use them before release.

They say don’t knock it before you try it. And sure enough, until recently, I have been fairly open to the idea of adopting Final Cut Pro X as my NLE of choice. But I have just delivered my first project cut exclusively on FCP X and must say it was a completely unpleasant experience. "Everything just changed in post", is the tagline for FCP X on Apple's website. It sure did: for the first time in 9 years as a professional editor I actually didn’t enjoy editing.

As I have covered in great detail in several prior articles here in ProVideo Coalition magazine, the most complete and most reliable method of connecting your critical video monitor to your computer based editing system is via a professional a/v i/o interface, like those Thunderbolt models now offered by AJA, Blackmagic, Matrox, and now even MOTU. However, most of them are more than what many editors need today in the tapeless acquisition, file-based era. Often editors no longer require any audi

LAS VEGAS - Trying to navigate the broadcast geek-fest known as NAB in half-a-day is about as realistic as taking in the glories of the Sistine Chapel by looking at one fresco...but I'll try.
I have to confess it's been over 20 years since setting foot in the chaotic but exciting arena of the Las Vegas Convention Center's NAB Convention, showcasing the latest, fastest and brightest in technology and trends. (The last thing I saw at NAB in 1992 was a $40,000 HD monitor with little HD mater

With Apple almost throwing the baby out with the bathwater in Final Cut Pro X, it’s down to Avid to steady the video-editing ship with a solid update to its venerable Media Composer.
The first big change is that Avid has gone down the 64-bit route and for Mac users it means that Lion is a requirement. The advantage of 64-bit, besides the processing boost, is the ability to access much more memory, which is vital for complex sequences that use a lot of effects.
