In three words – speed, power, cutting-edge.

The first time I saw Final Cut Pro X, back in February, this quote from the title of Stephen Ambrose’s book on the transcontinental railroad flashed into my head. Read More

It would be redundant of me to, once again, emphasize just how important the quality of the audio is both when planning preproduction, when shooting, and in post production.

For those many who have begun much of their filming using the DSLR's which, aside from being great for the photo enthusiast, can produce some beautiful video footage, but to the user's dismay, the audio quality for any of the DSLRs that I have heard is quite dreadful. There are about 85 emails in my in-box this morning with links to a speech I gave at the April Final Cut Pro User Group about my reactions to Apple’s presentation of Final Cut at NAB.

While I stand by most of my remarks, there was one unfortunate moment where I said, with a special dramatic emphasis for the crowd, that Final Cut Pro X was not ready for professional use. Read More

In the second part of our Intro to CS5.5 workshop, I talk with one of the most widely recognized dealers in the NLE business, Gary Bettan of Videoguys, to get his perspective on Adobe Creative Suite from a vendor’s point of view. We discuss the history of his company and outline some of the buyer’s guides and other resources available at the Videoguys web site, such as their system configurator and their suggested do-it-yourself builds for a PC-based editing system. We also discuss some of the m Read More

We know from the way the world works that they ought to come in predictable waves. Every eighteen months we eagerly await them. Invariably powerful and potentially game changing, we're not talking about the Tibetan monsoons or the latest White House scandal. We’re referring to milestone releases from Adobe: Version 4, Version 5, version 6—uh, oh wait. I mean version 5.5. Hey! What's with the new incremental release? Read More

History tells us that the software industry does not evolve linearly. Instead it evolves with sudden bursts of disruption followed by a lengthy period of normalization followed by another burst of disruption. I think it’s fair to say that we are at the tail end of one of those cyclical bursts as it relates to how content is authored, but we are only at the beginning of a profound period of normalization as it relates to how content is delivered, consumed, and monetized. This round of disruption Read More

First off Final Cut Pro X is a new application. It is not an update to FCP 7. I think that many, including me, will continue to use FCP 7 along with FCP X after FCP X arrives. I hope that there is a workflow between FCP 7 and FCP X. Read More

As you know Videoguys.com has been publishing DIY guides and system recommendation pages for years. We always make sure the latest version of Avid or Adobe Production Premium runs great on it. We are asked constantly about Sandy Bridge and if we recommend it. As of today we do NOT recommend Sandy Bridge for high end NLE workstations. We feel that if you need a new machine today, your best solution is to stick with an X58 based machine like our DIY8 build. Read More
