One of the first questions a “new born” wedding videographer will undoubtedly ask is “I have this bride who wants to use [insert popular music artist of the day] for her wedding video. Can I use it if she gives it to me?” Or, “Can I use it if I buy it on iTunes?” Or some version thereof. Just for the record. The answer is unequivocally “NO!” (If you want the 4-1-1 on music licensing, I have a pretty thorough blog post on the topic, along with links to all the popular sites for legally licensing Read More

fcp.co shared some tweets with Walter about CNN's layoffs due to the fact they can get reports from viewers with high quality consumer cameras for nothing. He's followed it up with this excellent article. We think Walter has expressed what a lot of editors have been thinking for a few years now, editing is now just a commodity. Many thanks to Walter for allowing us to reprint his article, we are sure it will spark off many good comments. Read More

Final Cut Pro X is very different and it takes a while to get used to it. I’ve been beating on the evaluation software provided by Apple for about two weeks as I write this review, along with a few hours worth of press briefings from Apple staff. I’ve also conferred with probably a dozen colleagues who are also trying to shake it out, including a number of experienced feature film editors. Without a doubt, it’s definitely worth tapping into some of the various training materials if you want to u Read More

Last year Blackmagic Design brought in its showstopper: DaVinci Resolve on the Mac for $1,000. No one expects that type of repeat performance at this year's NAB Show, but as the early tips come trickling in, this year is still shaping up to be pretty awesome.

Editing and Effects Software The big software releases of 2010 included DaVinci Resolve, Autodesk Smoke for Mac OS X, Avid Media Composer 5, Avid Pro Tools 9, Avid DS 10.5, Grass Valley EDIUS 6 and Adobe CS5. This year Avid is first Read More

Adobe is shipping its much-anticipated Creative Suite 5.

The big story is native 64-bit operation for all of the applications, which requires a 64-bit OS (Windows Vista/7 or Mac OS X "Snow Leopard") running on a processor that supports 64-bit operation. The upside of thi Read More

An issue with DSLR cameras that you must consider while setting up your rig is audio quality. DSLR cameras are equipped with just the most basic microphone and the sound is just okay, at best. If your talent is more than 6 feet away from the camera your audio quality will diminish quickly. Fortunately, the Canon DSLR cameras are all equipped with a mini-jack microphone input and we recommend adding a stereo microphone like the Azden SMX-10. Read More

I always enjoy the show – partly for the new toys – but also to hook up once again, face-to-face, with many friends in the business. I’m back home now and have had a day to decompress and make a few observations about NAB Convention.

First off, this was an extremely strong show for post. Tons of new versions of many of your favorite NLEs, color grading tools and other items. Second, the attendance was good. A bit more than last year – so still a “down” year compared with peaks of a few yea Read More

It's time to rock the broadcasters' favorite city once again. The 2010 NAB Show is upon us! If you thought a weak economy would mean nothing new to show, you are quite mistaken. Many manufacturers have introduced some of their products prior to April, but NAB will be the official unveiling for many innovations. Apple is sticking to its "no trade shows" policy and RED will host an off-site event, so, like last year, the show floor should actually be quite productive for those who attend. Read More
