Dual-Layer DVD Burner Roundup

DV Mag February 2005 By Ralph LaBarge dvd burnersI recently got a chance to review three new dual-layer DVD burners, including the LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW (www.lacie.com), the Pioneer DVR-A08 (www.pioneerelectronics.com), and the Sony DRU-710A (www.sony.com/dvdburner). Over a period of three weeks, I put each of these devices through their paces, burning over 100 test discs in the CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL formats. The Pioneer DVR-A08 and Sony DRU-710A are internal ATAPI drives, while the LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW drive is an external USB/FireWire drive. I tested all three drives using a Dell 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 system running Windows XP Professional. Because LaCie provides both Windows and Mac software with its drive, I also tested the d2 DVD+/-RW on a 1 GHz Apple eMac system. read more...
