Hitachi's G-Technology line of external hard drives has long been a favorite for creative professionals and others who generally need some combination of reliability, performance, capacity and redundancy. While Hitachi has several products in the G-Tech line that specialize in one or more of those qualities, their latest effort is an external storage generalist that can just about do it all. The G-RAID with Thunderbolt offers up to 4TB of capacity over two mirrored drives, or 8TB if configured f Read More

It takes well over a year to design, execute, deliver, and ensure the proper implementation of the roughly 5,000 or so assets it takes to get a CS release out the door (we’re already thinking about CS7). Along the away, there are innumerable institutional, technological, and political hurdles to overcome. It can be daunting, but we do everything we can to get it made with as few design compromises as possible. Read More

For the past number of years I have been working on a Mac Pro, with two 23" Apple Cinema Displays, running Legacy versions of FCP. I had added a Matrox MXO box, which went between my monitor card and my second ACD to provide Broadcast Monitoring so that I could view my video output. Hitting the Command F-12 keys would toggle the second monitor between a standard Mac Desktop and a Broadcast Monitor. This was extremely helpful in viewing and judging video output, as the Canvas window does not prov Read More

CS6 Production Premium is a milestone release, and we at Adobe think it will change the way editors work. Why? CS6 pairs a major overhaul of the editing experience in Adobe Premiere Pro with the biggest release of After Effects in more than a decade. We’ve added a raft of new features to Adobe Audition, so it’s easier than ever to make your productions sound as good as they look. Plus, we’re adding key new tools to your kit: Adobe Prelude, which is designed to simplify logging and ingest of file Read More

As I have covered in great detail in several prior articles here in ProVideo Coalition magazine, the most complete and most reliable method of connecting your critical video monitor to your computer based editing system is via a professional a/v i/o interface, like those Thunderbolt models now offered by AJA, Blackmagic, Matrox, and now even MOTU. However, most of them are more than what many editors need today in the tapeless acquisition, file-based era. Often editors no longer require any audi Read More

One of the biggest announcements hailing from the 2012 National Association of Broadcasters expo last week was the first real look at Adobe CS6. Last year at NAB 2011, Creative COW members picked Adobe Premiere CS5.5 as the Best Video Editing System for 2011. User reaction to CS6 was even more positive than last year and Adobe looks to have its biggest, most innovative launch ever set for even greater success in 2012. Read More

With Apple almost throwing the baby out with the bathwater in Final Cut Pro X, it’s down to Avid to steady the video-editing ship with a solid update to its venerable Media Composer.

The first big change is that Avid has gone down the 64-bit route and for Mac users it means that Lion is a requirement. The advantage of 64-bit, besides the processing boost, is the ability to access much more memory, which is vital for complex sequences that use a lot of effects. Read More
