Not everyone loves the hustle and bustle of conferences. If you are an introvert that's more comfortable in an edit suite than on the trade show floor, don't despair. I've found a way to go to these events, enjoy myself, and win. You see, I fit the classic definition of an introvert. I enjoy spending time by myself. I like one-on-one conversations rather than group discussions. I need time alone to recharge my batteries and process the day's events. This generally isn't the perfect personalit Read More

Once a new editor has learned the basics of editing video, there are a handful of tools that they should learn as they advance their skills. Oftentimes simple to grasp tools get left behind in favor of more flashy effects and filters. Today I want to talk about a couple of easy tools that will improve the overall polish of your video: the vectorscope and waveform monitor. While clicking around your editing software, you may have stumbled across these screens and quickly clicked away, intimidated Read More

Video is, at heart, a highly artificial art form. Sure, a finished video looks natural, perhaps flowing so smoothly that even an experienced video creator finds him or herself starting to believe that the events on screen must have happened exactly as presented. But we all know that's not the case. It takes a million cuts and edits, so small and so quick that a viewer barely even notices them, to turn raw footage into the slick product you show to an audience. These articles will help give you t Read More

Let's face it; there's nothing very sexy about rendering your video and audio projects. Everyone hates the render step, but everyone also recognizes that they can't get far with delivering their project without out it. So, like it or not, there has to be a render step. That's the unfortunate news. The good news is that the new Render As dialog box in Vegas Pro 11 makes the process a bit more pleasant than it was in earlier versions of the application. The new dialog box offers several improvemen Read More

You know why filmmakers and videographers always say “We’ll fix it in post“? Because there are some problems that you can’t avoid no matter how many years of experience you have behind the camera. I’ll learn to avoid these problems soon enough. Read More

Scott was just finishing up a three week edit using Avid Media Composer. He enjoys longer-form projects like this one as he always find himself learning something new about the non-linear editing tool that he's using for that extended period of time. While he's in and out of these editing tools nearly everyday (be it Avid, FCP or Premiere Pro) it’s a prolonged period in a single one of them that often revels something he never knew before. In this case it was some tips, tricks and tutorials abou Read More

Most all of the tools we use in post-production are quite full featured. They’ve been updated over many years with features added along the way. Avid Media Composer is one of the most full featured of the non-linear editors out there. I’ve had several occasion where I’ve been working with other MC users and they ask “how’d you do that?” Or “what was that button?” On the flip side I’ve been working around other editors and I learn something entirely new myself. Here’s a few tools that Media Compo Read More

The 4th of July means barbecues, family gathering and fun in the sun and the party concludes with the traditional pyro- show around the country. Everyone wants to capture the family fun, but when it comes to the Big Light Show in the Sky, shooting great firework footage is more than pointing the camera into the sky. The less light you have, the harder it is to focus or capture an image that isn’t underexposed or overly grainy. Throw in a fireworks scene that changes from dark to light within nan Read More

Richard Harrington got a great tip from a friend... You can work natively in Final Cut Pro X. You just need to change some settings to overcome its desire to eat up disc space. Start by launching Final Cut Pro X. Be sure to keep an eye out for Abba Shapiro's forthcoming title.
