Doug has been following the ‘NLE Wars’ with quite a bit of interest for some time now. Like many, folks who have been using FCP for years, including all of his own current work work, as well as a number of feature films in the past, He is very concerned about the end-of-life for FCP/FC Studio in the wake of the release of FCP X, and he's really, really, not motivated to switch to another platform. Switching costs time, switching costs money. Switching means that a video that could take a half a Read More

We've been very active over the past few months in LinkedIn group discussions. There are several really great groups with very knowledgable professionals participating. Some of the groups you can find us in include Video Editors, Digital Video Editing, Adobe Premiere, Creative COW, Avid, EDIUS professional users, Film TV Professionals, Post Production Professionals, FCPUG Netwrok Community and Final Cut Pro Video Editing. What I like so much about Linked In groups is that they tend to be filled Read More

They say don’t knock it before you try it. And sure enough, until recently, I have been fairly open to the idea of adopting Final Cut Pro X as my NLE of choice. But I have just delivered my first project cut exclusively on FCP X and must say it was a completely unpleasant experience. "Everything just changed in post", is the tagline for FCP X on Apple's website. It sure did: for the first time in 9 years as a professional editor I actually didn’t enjoy editing. Read More

What editing package do you use? What should I buy? Do I have to be an Avid editor to work on films? Is Premiere replacing Final Cut? I hear good things about Vegas. Should I try it? We hear these questions over and over. Read More

The new (or renewed) interest in Avid Media Composer is being fueled by Apple’s launch of Final Cut Pro X last year and aided by Avid’s discounted cross-grade price. Many experienced FCP editors are now investigating the nuances of what seems like a completely foreign interface to some. Tutorial DVDs like Steve Hullfish’s Avid Media Composer for Final Cut Pro Users from Class on Demand is a great start. Read More

With Apple almost throwing the baby out with the bathwater in Final Cut Pro X, it’s down to Avid to steady the video-editing ship with a solid update to its venerable Media Composer.

The first big change is that Avid has gone down the 64-bit route and for Mac users it means that Lion is a requirement. The advantage of 64-bit, besides the processing boost, is the ability to access much more memory, which is vital for complex sequences that use a lot of effects. Read More

For a limited time only, Avid Media Composer & Apple Final Cut Pro Owners can step-up to Avid's professional editing & finishing software at the lowest price ever! At last year's NAB show Avid launched a special Media Composer Crossgrade program for Final Cut Pro editors to come back to Avid for just $995. That program was a huge success! Now Avid is upping the ante and going all in by making the same offer to Avid Symphony 6! Yes, that's right, FCP editors may now crossgrade to Avid Symphony Read More

Like most Avid, editors I was waiting impatiently for the 6.0 release. Dreams of 64-bit architecture were spinning in my head: background rendering, super fast transcoding, more AMA features and a new title tool were my constant smile-inducing dreams. Then came the reality...which wasn’t bad either. Read More

On Friday night, I had the opportunity to join the 9th annual Pre NAB editors lounge panel discussion as a last minute fill in. I found myself uncharacteristically less participatory, mainly due to the experience and stature of the others on the panel. The brain power on the panel could power a small town. Read More

Shane started his blog in 2005, when he made my leap from editing on an Avid in standard definition…to editing with FCP in high definition…thus the name Little Frog in High Def (Little Frog being his Indian name from my youth). This blog was him talking about his foray into the world of HD specifically using Final Cut Pro…for broadcast TV shows. A diary of my successes and his failures…lessons he wanted to share so that people could learn from my…well, successes and failures. Read More

It's hard to talk about software in 2012 without mentioning "the cloud". You've seen the ads from sofware vendors asking what your cloud strategy is? With all this hype, it's worth taking a look at the state of cloud video editing and the promise it could hold for Professional Video Editors. Read More

Our short and sweet blog post yesterday about switching to Avid MC6 for our broadcast work touched off a flurry of requests for yet more information on our decision. Folks want to know “what specific features did it have that the others didn’t.” “Can you break it down feature by feature, why you made the switch?” ”You seemed so gung-ho about Adobe early on in your switch.” Read More

OK, it’s a provocative headline, and while Philip doesn’t for a minute think Avid are deliberately setting out to sell out editors, it may be an inevitable result of inevitable technological innovation. Read More
