While clicking around your editing software, you may have stumbled across these screens and quickly clicked away, intimidated Read More

Sure, a finished video looks natural, perhaps flowing so smoothly that even an experienced video creator finds him or herself starting to believe that the events on screen must have happened exactly as presented. But we all know that's not the case. It takes a million cuts and edits, so small and so quick that a viewer barely even notices them, to turn raw footage into the slick product you show to an audience. These articles will help give you t Read More

You know why filmmakers and videographers always say “We’ll fix it in post“? Because there are some problems that you can’t avoid no matter how many years of experience you have behind the camera. You probably met these unwelcome guests the first time that you shot any video footage. And maybe you shrugged your shoulders and thought: Well, I’m just a beginner. This last week was very eye-opening for me in a few ways. It’s not that any of these ideas are new to me; it’s just that I’m looking at them from a different viewpoint. Sometimes, you just take “facts” for granted. Sometimes you have epiphanies but you don’t give them all that much credence. I’m looking at these things anew. I’m “just” realizing the implications of this information and how it will really apply to me in my future and my future career path. Read More

Over the course of an edit session, you may spend hours or longer fretting over a number of edit choices. Tempo, music, colour tinting, which take to use…the list goes on and on. Let me throw in another decision that, whether you realize it or not, can have a huge impact on your project. Choice of font. The launch of Apple Final Cut Pro X stood the editing industry on its collective ear. It also sparked some very interesting – and occasionally heated – discussions about what the design of a modern, nonlinear editing application really should be. NLEs that we all use today are a collection of terminology, tools, designs and workflows borrowed from different technologies. Read More

Over the past year Videoguys.com have taken some heat in some online tech forums and communities. We were very late to embrace the original Sandy Bridge processors and even when we did recommend one, it was with some caveats.

fcp.co shared some tweets with Walter about CNN's layoffs due to the fact they can get reports from viewers with high quality consumer cameras for nothing. He's followed it up with this excellent article. We think Walter has expressed what a lot of editors have been thinking for a few years now, editing is now just a commodity. Many thanks to Walter for allowing us to reprint his article, we are sure it will spark off many good comments. Read More
