The new sideKick HD is a versatile recording solution designed to ease production workflow and satisfy the demands of both producers and postproduction editors. The camera-mountable sideKick HD captures video directly from HD/SDI or HDMI outputs at bit rates up to 220 Mbit/s, with 4:2:2 sampling and 10-bit resolution in multiple codecs starting with ProRes on removable 2.5" SSD drives. Recording directly to high-quality NLE formats eliminates time-consuming transcoding, which can degrade image q Read More

I can say without reservation that Avid Media Composer 5 is an upgrade that truly deserves the “Hot” rating from our product review ranking index. Media Composer has been one of the top nonlinear editors since the existence of NLEs. In fact, it pretty much jump-stared the whole NLE revolution. Version 5 contains a ton of new features (several quite earth-shattering, if you’re a longtime Avid editor) that answered many previous customer requests and complaints. Read More

Recently I was reading a blog post from director Robin Schmidt over at ww.elskid.com which got me curious. He was doing a comparison between MPEG Streamclip and rarevisions 5DtoRGB. I was using MPEG Streamclip for myself to convert my 5D footage. From the beginning I was always aware of the obvious gamma shift you get using MPEG Streamclip. I just started to convert to Proxy files for editing and reconnect to my original files. Read More

To faithfully translate Gilbert’s journey from page to screen, the filmmakers lobbied to shoot the movie entirely on location in chronological order. And after nine months of intense scouting and preproduction planning, Murphy led 40 cast and crew members — including Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson — on a four-and-a-half month rolling production effort that generated 422,000 feet of film, or roughly 70 hours of footage. Post Magazine has posted three articles by Jon Moser about Avid Media Composer 5 and it's impact on the industry. I was very happy to be a part of his research. Jon and I exchanged emails and phone calls while he was working on the article. We talked about the waves MC5 was making in the Final Cut Pro community as well as the importance of new features like AMA ProRes, Quicktime and DSLR support. We aslo discussed the impact of opening up Media Composer to 3rd party hardware for monitoring HD. T Read More

Stop transcoding, rewrapping, importing, and/or copying media and start editing now. AMA (Avid Media Access) is a revolutionary plug-in architecture that greatly accelerates your tapeless video workflows, including RED, QuickTime, XDCAM, P2, GFCAM, and Canon XF. With AMA, you can simply connect a supported card/disc or device and begin viewing and cutting footage right away — no need to transcode media or use other software to view or extract the clips. OK, I am NOT going to say that Avid Media Composer 5.0 is a “game changer.” Mainly because I hate that term. And I don’t think that it is changing the editing game. But, what it is doing is adding more tools to make it a better application. Hmmm…well, I might actually have to change my thoughts on the term “game changer,” because it is actually changing the game, just not the game you all are thinking about. The game Avid is changing is the one it has been playing with it’s user base. Read More

With any big software upgrade there’s going to be changes. Some visible, some not so visible. Personally, I love those changes ... as long as they add new or needed functionality without getting in the way. One of the big things we often worry about with big upgrades are interface changes that might clutter up a clean design or impart on the editor additions or subtractions that might seem more like a step backwards. Of course much of this type of thing is subjective. One editor’s productivity e Read More

I have been able to keep an eye on some of the coice announcements. The choicest of these, from my perspective was Avid’s announcement of Media Composer 5.0!

Media Composer 5 introduces a few major updates, the most significant of which is direct access to Quicktime and R3D media files without import or transcode. Read More

Avid just isn’t slowing down. I advised them that they just needed to slow down. But did they listen? Nope. Why slow down? Because just as soon as you get used to one version, another version comes along and has tons more features that you want. And when you JUST CONVINCE a company to upgrade to one version of Media Composer, you might be hard pressed to get them to do it again. Many large facilities don’t upgrade often, so when Avid keeps hitting us with new release after new release, we might Read More

I work from home about 50% of the time. I do all of that work off of a MacBook Pro. I would love to invest in a nice Mac Pro setup, but whenever I do hard core work I get brought into an office with a nice Symphony system or FCP suite. All in all, I am very excited about the new Media Composer software because it gives me a few reasons to tell clients that it would be more efficient to use Avid instead of FCP for once. Read More

I have been an Avid editor for at least 10 years now, but I always thought that they were catering to their higher-end users and news stations – not people like me. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It appears that Avid is listening to their user base, and it definitely shows in Media Composer version 5. First the big news – Avid now supports third-party hardware! I couldn’t believe it! Don’t get me wrong, I love working on an Adrenaline just like the next guy, but I definitely couldn’t affo Read More
