There are clear indications that this update resulted from reorganizing, rewriting and modernizing major portions of the underlying code.
At first glance, the user interface may appear to have changed little from previous versions of Media Composer. However, a closer examination reveals the addition of some new tools, and updated functionality in older ones. The new “Smart Tool” pane in the Timeline window is the most obvious addition. In it sit the segment and trim overwrite/ insert mode to

I’ve been an Avid editor for the past 11 years and Media Composer is the only edit system I use on a day to day basis. Being an editor for a full service production company, one day I’m cutting a sizzle reel for a pilot episode for a TV program, the next a 30 second commercial spot, and a few days after that it could be a 30 minute educational video. There is a wide spectrum on content that I’m creating and Media Composer always gets me where I’m going, without me ever having to worry about my

Media Composer 5 has been out for a while now… And since my initial impressions of it I’ve been thinking more about what it signals for the future of Avid in general and Media Composer specifically – about what I expect to see in the coming versions.
What follows is nothing more than my guesses and hopes – a wish-list of sorts… These are feature and changes I expect to see in Media Composer (and Symphony) 5.5 or 6.0 based on what I’ve observed over the last few years, and especially with t

I recently acquired a Matrox MXO2 Mini to use on my system. Mainly for use with the new Avid Media Composer 5.0 for monitoring, but I got the MAX version to help speed up H.264 encoding. I do a LOT of that for client approvals. Yes, I still have the big boy, the MXO2. But when I boot to my Avid partition, I swap a couple cables (control cable and HDMI) to my MXO2 Mini. To have access to Compressor on my Avid partition, and to have access to a few FCP codecs like DVCPRO HD, XDCAM EX and HDV,

When I ask you who the main NLE players are, most people mention Media Composer and Final Cut Pro right off the bat, with Premiere Pro and Vegas taking up the rear, and in the last few years, I think that Avid has really taken a beating from Final Cut Pro.

Now, once you hit play, there is no lag, no stuttering just crystal clear HD video playing in sync with your timeline. I really don't know what else I can say. The MXO2 mini was awesome, and the unit worked like a charm, and now with support for Adobe's CS5

It was only a few years ago that Avid, trying to win back the hearts and minds of customers who were abandoning them and going to Final Cut and other systems, adopted the motto: “We’re Listening.” With the release of Media Composer 5, it’s obvious they did.
