pple’s launch of FCP X and the End of Life of the previous Final Cut Pro product line has created a situation where many people are unsure how to continue. If you were reliant on Final Cut Pro 7 or earlier for your work, where to now? There’s no clear answer to this, so let’s work through the most obvious options. Read More

A year ago – even six months ago – there was no sign of dissruptive change in the film and television post production industry. Obviously things were changing, the highest-end gear was starting to make it’s way to the lower tiers (Smoke for Mac, DaVinci Resolve) but all that was changing there was the accessibility of existing tools for a wider audience. Then something happened. Actually that something was two things in one. Final Cut Pro X… Read More

The FCP X launch, and the discontent surrounding the new product, fed into a larger anxiety about Apple's intentions for the pro Mac market. Was FCP X just a single, poorly handled event or was it an indication of Apple's direction from now on, media pros be damned? With all this talk of bringing iOS features "back to the Mac," is OS X about to lose its luster for content creation? Is the Mac Pro going the way of the XServe? Read More

In the first release of Final Cut Pro X, the interaction with I/O devices such as the Matrox MXO2 products is different than with previous versions of Final Cut Pro when it comes to capturing, monitoring, and outputting video. Exporting to H.264 files from the new Compressor 4 using Matrox MAX-enabled MXO2 devices remains up to 5 times faster than software alone. Read More

Final Cut Pro X is truly a dramatic rewrite of Apple's mature and well-developed video-editing software. It borrows some interface elements from iMovie that may disappoint seasoned professionals, and it also loses many key features that are simply an absolute necessity in the professional world, like XML export. On the other hand, those looking to upgrade from iMovie will find a lot more features in Final Cut Pro X, but there are some caveats. Read More

We knew that Gary Adcock was the perfect person to deal with an app that aspires to meet the needs of the hardest-core, highest-end pros. Or does it? What if Apple told you that Final Cut Pro X wasn't meant for you? Gary goes beyond his own knee-jerk reaction to the release to get under the hood of FCPX, and he likes a lot of what he sees. In part 2 of his series, he looks at changes to how FCPX deals with hardware, processing, and the underlying structure you don't see. Read More

Even as I write, this unprecedented (in our industry) drama is still unfolding. Not since the "New Coke" debacle of 1985 has one company raised so much furor and alienated so many with a product change. But the situation with Final Cut Pro X is not a simple case of a flavor gone wrong...as one blogger pointed out, these are people's livelihoods one company has decided to play with. By this point it doesn't matter whether FCP X is "awesome" as Mr. Jobs said in an email in April of 2010, what Read More

When Allan Tepper began publishing his FCP-exodus articles last year, even some other ProVideo Coalition magazine writers thought and commented that his words were an exaggeration. However, now some of them are defecting from Final Cut Pro, and several other award-winning editors are doing the same. Part of the enticement to jump ship are the special crossgrade pricing being offered by Adobe and Avid, and part is the fact that they need either features which are currently missing in FCP X and/or Read More

MacRumors reports that Apple held a private Final Cut Pro X (FCP X) briefing for enterprise contracts in London on July 6th. One first hand report has been posted to the internet detailing what Apple discussed during the event. Alex4d summarizes tweets by @aPostEngineer which reveals the following points: 1. FCP XML in/out is coming via 3rd party soon…no FCP 6/7 support project support coming ever it seems… 2. Ability to buy FCP7 licenses for enterprise deployments coming in the next few week Read More

This review is an attempt to assess Final Cut Pro X, what may now be the most written about nonlinear editing tool in the history of nonlinear editing tools. To some, this review may feel unfinished. In that respect it is very much like Final Cut Pro X itself. Writing a review of a piece of software that is clearly designed to do so much could go on forever. But I can't touch on everything here. Forgive me if I skip over certain features entirely (like FCPX’s color correct, actually a very nice Read More

Since Final Cut X was released a few weeks ago, there have been a large number of Final Cut Pro post-production professionals looking into other NLE options. Final Cut Pro X is a very different animal, and lacks specific FCP7 features that certain users require or demand. It also changes up existing post-production workflows and is in general a disruptive release. Read More

When you’re designing software you always have a “use case” or typical user in mind. For our Assisted Editing software I can pretty much name every person we had in mind when creating it. First Cuts was definitely made for me. Transcriptize was an idea from Larry Jordan and was made for him. Sequence Clip Reporter‘s inspiration was from my friend Les Perkins. Read More

If you're a Final Cut editor contemplating making a change in the wake of Apple's FCPX roll-out, you're not alone. Here's one long-time Final Cut user who tried out Adobe Premiere CS5.5 on a paying gig. He found a lot to like, and not much to miss. Read More

Even though the FCPX rollout seemingly exposes Apple’s hubris, I’m glad they did it. They seem to be the only company capable of pushing boundaries. I have no doubt FCPX will eventually catch up to where FCP7 was in terms of features and capability. Read More
