There has been an amazing amount of chatter around the HD video capabilities of recent still cameras - if they can still be called that! Rather than play into the hupe of what MIGHT be possible with these cameras, Creative Cow Magazine Contributing Editor Marco Solorio takes you inside the real world of production with paying clients using these cameras, including workarounds for their current limitations, and some of the things that video shooters will need to know as they get started using the Read More

It took a lot of commenting and complaining from the many folks who bought a Canon 5D Mark II but unless you live under a rock (or just don’t really care) then you’ve heard that Canon is releasing an updated firmware for the 5D Mark II that will allow for 24p recording Read More

If Gebbs Wedding Films' Michael Gebben didn't have a strict personal policy against selling clients on technology, you can bet he'd be bragging about the two most significant additions to his arsenal he's made recently: Canon's 5D Mark II and EOS 7D DSLRs. For Gebben, a rising industry star whose demo was recently selected for use in the nationally syndicated TV show Wedlock or Deadlock, these so-called fusion cameras have made his already great-looking same day edits (SDEs)-his studio's special Read More

If you are familiar with the more expensive Canon EOS 7D, you'll notice that quite a few of the features listed above were handed down from this camera. There is a lot of chatter online about the viability of the EOS 7D now that the Rebel T2i offers many of its features but with a price savings of $900 (based on street pricing). The thinking is that maybe they should get the Rebel T2i instead and put the extra $$$ toward better & faster lenses. Since this overview was written with the idea of he Read More

People have been talking about the amazing video footage coming from new DSLR cameras, at resolutions that can easily exceed 4K digital cinema files, for a couple of years now, in all kinds of forums, including Cinematography, After Effects, and many NLE forums. In the past year, that traffic has continued to accelerate, and so we invite you to join us in a newly-created forum to concentrate all of that energy in one place: Creative Cow's new "DSLR Video" forum. Buying a Canon 7D is a smart move well done, don't second guess yourself with, should I have got the new 550/T2i for half the price? The Canon 7D can do so much more on the photo side and it is tried and tested on the video side, there has to be some downside to a new camera for half the price. Read More

The 7D has manual control, great function control, and can work with a variety of traditional lenses and accessories.

Canon is stepping up its prosumer DSLR game with an all-new camera line, and it all starts with the 7D. Sporting HD video in 1080/24p, 720/60p, and the 18 megapixel stills are also impressive, but the most attractive aspect is the huge assortment of Canon EF and EF-S lenses. Read More

Besides all the advantages and possibilities shooting with a HDSLR offers, there are some major drawbacks. For me the biggest problems are: rolling shutter (but even the red has it), no audio control and the too contrasty, over-compressed, 4:2:0 h264 output. You can create or download a “flat-look” profile for your camera, which basically eliminates contrast by lifting blacks and crushing highlights when the camera sensor processes the image before compressing it. After playing around and testin Read More

As I followed Apples presentation on my favorite tech blogs, while watching folks reactions on Twitter (follow us) and Facebook (become a fan), I started thinking about how the iPad could impact content creation. Sure it’s a great delivery vehicle for video and multimedia, but could it be used to help us make content of the future? I’m 100% certain it could, but it may take a few generations of iPads to get there. So in an attempt to speed up the process, I’m putting out this wish list of applic Read More
